Cycling sportives
Mass-participation road rides with timed chips, feed stations and distances from 50 to 300 km. Pick a target event, book early, and get training.
Sportives — or cyclosportives if you want to sound proper — are the backbone of the UK and Ireland cycling calendar. They're non-race timed events on closed or semi-closed roads, with feed stations, mechanical support, and usually a choice of distances so riders of most abilities can take part.
The UK sportive season runs from roughly March to October, with classic events like the Ride London, Dragon Ride, Etape Caledonia, Tour of the Peak, and the Tour of Wessex. Ireland has its own strong calendar including the Wicklow 200, Tour de Burren and An Post Cycle Series.
